Migraine Pain May Worsen With Painkiller Overuse
New evidence suggests that pain medicine taken improperly may escalate problems with migraines.
Wired PR News.com — Taking too much medicine for migraines may pose a bigger issue for patients. As reported by the Associated Press (AP), research suggests that overuse of pain medicine including prescriptions such as narcotics, can increase the risk of chronic migraines, escalating problems associated with the condition such as pain, nausea, and light sensitivity.
As quoted of migraine sufferer Rena Cerbone in the AP report, while discussing her experience with painkiller issues, “It was a double-edged sword… I was taking Fiorinal on a daily basis just to function.” Cerbone was stated to fall into the cycle that many do that can often entail an over reliance on painkillers as opposed to migraine prevention treatments.
A reported 30 million individuals in America suffer with migraines. As noted in the AP report, factors such as insufficient sleep, unhealthy eating, and other things commonly present during holidays can trigger migraines. The article states that some specialists recommend that those who regularly suffer from migraines inquire about prevention medications, utilize a headache diary to possibly help identify triggers, and be cautious not to overuse painkillers.
